Dr. Chris Hopkinson discusses airborne laser scanning - what it is, and how it is used. Airborne laser scanning maps ground and near ground surface coordinates at a very high resolution. The presentation covers what types of data can be collected this way, and some applications for use. Dr. Chris Hopkinson is a LiDAR project design and proposal consultant with Otterburn Geographic and now with the University of Lethbridge.

  • The new LMS-Q780 High Altitude Airborne Laser Scanner

The RIEGL® LMS-Q780 long-range airborne laser scanner makes use of a powerful laser source, multiple-time-around (MTA) processing, and digital full waveform analysis. This combination allows the operation at varying flight altitudes and is therefore ideally suited for aerial survey of complex terrain. Unique features of this instrument include the automated resolution of range ambiguities, typically occurring at large measurement ranges and high repetition rates. The effect of range ambiguities appearing in airborne laser scanning is known as "multiple-time-around" or "multiple-pulses-in-the-air. RIEGL's new generation of airborne laser scanners overcome this limitation by multiple-time-around (MTA) processing.

A mobile LiDAR scanner mounted on a car or an airborne scanner operated in a helicopter can provide a dense point cloud depicting highways, their surroundings and the road surface very accurately. Using photographs taken at the same time and control points measured with GPS improves the accuracy and helps to compensate the gaps in the GPS signal caused by tall buildings and trees. Laser scanning can be executed without putting people at risk in the middle of busy traffic.
