First experiment with the Velodyne VLP-16 LiDAR 'Puck' mounted on a brushless gimbal on a Devourer X8 heavy-lift multi-rotor UAV. The sensor mount also includes the Advanced Navigation Spatial DUAL GPS/IMU unit and a machine vision camera. This was a first trial of the laser scanner over a small pine stand near South Arm in southern Tasmania, Australia. Mobile laser scanning group of the Finnish Geodetic Institute actively applies new measuring and modelling techniques for various applications, forestry being one of the key focus areas. Airborne laser scanning has already been proven to be a great tool for large area inventory and static terrestrial laser scanning for detailed small area characteristics. The registration of multiple surface point clouds into a common reference frame is a well addressed topic, and the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) is - perhaps - the most used method when registering laser scans due to their irregular nature. In this work, we examine the proposed Iterative Closest Projected Point (ICPP) algorithm for the simultaneous registration of multiple point clouds.

The new RIEGL LMS-Q780 long-range airborne laser scanner makes use of a powerful laser source, multiple-time-around (MTA) processing, and digital full waveform analysis. This combination allows the operation at varying flight altitudes and is therefore ideally suited for aerial survey of complex terrain.
